Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion--dancing. Her dream is to appear on "The Corny Collins Show," Baltimore's hippest dance party on TV. Tracy seems a natural fit for the show except for one not-so-little problem--she doesn't fit in. Her plus-sized figure has always set her apart from the cool crowd, which she is reminded of by her loving but overly protective plus-sized mother, Edna. That doesn't stop Tracy because if there is one thing that this girl knows, it's that she was born to dance. After wowing Corny Collins at her high school dance, Tracy wins a spot on his show and becomes an instant on-air sensation, much to the chagrin of the show's reigning princess, Amber Von Tussle, and her scheming mother, Velma, who runs television station WYZT. Even worse for Amber is the fact that it's not just the audience who loves the new girl in town; Amber's sweetheart, Link Larkin, seems to be smitten with Tracy's charms as well. This dance party gets personal as a bitter feud erupts between the girls as they compete for the coveted "Miss Teenage Hairspray" crown. At school, however, a short stint in detention and raised-eyebrows caused by the budding relationship between her best friend Penny Pingleton and Seaweed opens Tracy's eyes to a bigger issue than the latest dance craze or the coolest hairdo--racial inequality. Throwing caution to the wind, she leads a march with Motormouth Maybelle to fight for integration and winds up with an arrest warrant instead. Tracy is on the lam now and goes underground--literally--to her best friend Pennys basement. Has Tracy's luck finally run out? Will she miss the final dance-off against Amber and forfeit the title of "Miss Hairspray," or will she sing and dance her way out of trouble again?

I am simply let down everytime I get talked into going to an american made comedy. Who's rating these comedy movies... post pubescent boys and girls? I guess if you think bare breasted women, stupid cliches' and just plain dumb writing is funny... more power to you. I'll stick to the foreign comedies, until Hollywood can produce something more funny than this type of garbage.
I absolutely loved this movie. I went with my sister and my 2yr old nephew(midnight show) expecting him to fall asleep during the movie......WRONG HE TOO LOVED IT!!!
I saw this movie today, and yes I've seen the original and I liked the original. But I liked the new one as well, I found it funny and entertaining. Its a good movie to take the whole family to. I thought the cast was very well casted.
I could talk about this movie forever, it was great..but bottom line, i think John Travolta was frickin hilarious..i have to admit he was never one of my favorites, but he went a long way to change my mind with his performance in this show,,way to go Barbarino!!!!
I just had to say that over this past summer I've seen alot(And i mean alot) of bad movies during the summer so when i went 2 see hairspray I thought it might of been the same as all the other bad summer movies i've seen.
But I was totally wrong Hairspray was the best summer movie of the year to me.... It had everything in it
.Good Acting
.Great Directing
. GREAT MUSIC
"Hairspary" was one of the best musicals ever! John Travolta was hillarous, laughing everytime he talked! Zac Efron and Queen Latifah did a outstanding job! Love the movie 5/5!
i thought this movie was amazing.
i love how they edited the ending to make seaweeds sister win ms. teenage hairspray.
i thought john travolta in drag would be stupid, but it turned out to be one of the stronger things in the movie.
zac efron as link was a good idea. he's a good singer and a good actor, too. he was little pathetic in "without love" though. haha.
i thought elijah kelly was the best singer out of the entire cast. "run and tell that" was the best vocally performed song of the entire movie.
queen latifah did an all right job at motomouth. she wasnt quite fitting for the part though.
amanda bynes did a good job as penny, too. she's not the best at singing, but shes a good actress.
last but not least, nikki blonsky, as tracy turnblad. a m a z i n g. for her first film, she was superb.
overall score - 100/100. this movie satisfied in every way. m,usic, acting, plot, visuals. the entire thing was entertaining. i smell oscars and golden globes =)
